Putting another feather in the culture cap of Hyderabad, the prestigious UNESCO Asia Pacific Merit award for heritage conservation was presented to Chowmahalla Palace on March 15 by UNESCO representative Takahiko Makino to Princess Esra Jah, former wife of Prince Mukarram Jah Bahadur.

This turned into reality, thanks to the interest shown by the erstwhile royals of Hyderabad, heritage lovers and officials. Chowmahalla Palace, the royal seat of the Asaf Jahi rulers, bagged the UNESCO award after competing with heritage sites in 43 countries. UNESCO appreciated the restoration of the palace and efforts to rescue ‘an extraordinary complex from years of abandonment’.

According to G. Kishan Rao, palace director, the conservation project began in August 2000 with a multidisciplinary team of architects, urban designers, conservationists, art consultants, museum experts, historians, textile restorers and scholars. Conservation architects and heritage experts made a presentation on the restoration of Chowmahalla.
